Accutane Birth Defects Depakote (Divalproex) is known generically as divalproex sodium and is prescribed to treat epileptic seizures, manic depressive disorder, epilepsy, migraine headaches and symptoms associated with neuropathy.

Use of Depakote has been associated with birth defects, most commonly with spina bifida. One study has shown that of women who took Depakote while pregnant, over 20% had babies with adverse outcomes.
